Commentary by Wayne Lee
I am at last back on the west coast, the best coast, and best of all, my time zone. I did the best I could on a Connecticut couch for a week of chaos as kids came together in a way that only kids can. It somehow seemed like normal craziness for this family, and you just rolled with it, which I did.
Airports, TSA, four-hour layovers. It’s just not worth it anymore. I’m too old for this stuff. I am looking forward to going nowhere, doing nothing and enjoying every damn minute of it. The last time I heard it was called “retirement”.
“New York, New York, big city of dreams but everything in New York ain’t always what it seems. You might be fooled if you come from out of town, but I’m down by law and I know my way around,” wrote Grand Master Flash in 1983. And it still holds true today.
It was in many ways a great trip back east. I spent quality time with my oldest and youngest children and their spouses and my granddaughters. But for me, there is “no there, there, “on the east coast. It’s a nice place on a highway next to nothing nearby. There are no bike lanes or pedestrian-friendly spaces, but there is a nice orchard a half mile down the road. Otherwise, no social life.
I have enjoyed my 20-plus years here in Eagle Point and don’t want to leave no matter what my oldest daughter has in mind. I live in a nice town that offers me a wide variety of options within walking distance. I love this town and have no reason to leave.
What can I say? I want to be here for as many days as possible in order to enjoy the neighbors and friends I have developed over the nearly two decades of my interaction with the community I’ve come to enjoy and embrace. So, with that in mind, I prepare to embark on this final push toward what I consider the final chapter a life well lived.
This is by no means the final chapter just yet. I may still yet conclude my journey on the east coast or elsewhere. I’m just not ready yet for a major relocation as of this moment. But it could happen. As they say, never say never.
