The Eagle Point City Council held their regular meeting Feb. 24 and it was one of those rare meetings with no new business on the agenda. Instead, the city took time to recognize all the persons and agencies who took part in the huge animal abuse case that took place in Eagle Point.

Mayor Kathy Sell presented certificates and thanked each of the individuals from law enforcement, animal control and the veterinarians who all came together not knowing what they would find or be forced to deal with. Eagle Point Police Chief Jim Hamilton stated the scene was so overwhelming, they returned to the home on two different days and each time found a pair of dogs still living inside a wall.
Those recognized for their service included Eagle Point Police officers Lt. Mike Anselmi as well as Interim Seargeant Daniel Cardenas, Senior Officer Chris Stover and Records Specialist Danielle Campagna. A big shout-out went to Dr. Drew Lewis of the Rogue Valley Veterinary Emergency Office and Dr. Michaela Brubaker of the Animal Control Office of the Jacksonville Veterinary Hospital. The operation also included the Mercy Flights Mobile Health Team.

“This was a major undertaking and required extensive coordination and teamwork to properly investigate.” The various teams eventually found 64 live dogs. All of whom are have been treated and are being rehomed. The case is still working through the court system, but thanks to the Midwest Schipperke Rescue many of the dogs have already been placed in good homes and the rest all are being well taken care of while awaiting adoption.

In other news, the city announced they will review the application to rezone roughly six acres of land from RF-1 (Residential Farm) to RD-1-12 (Residential with one home per 1,200 sq. ft.) located in the area of 1015 Palmira Dr. at the next council meeting.
