The Eagle Point Planning Commission met March 17 with the main item on the agenda being a proposal to build a three-unit commercial building on a one-acre parcel at the corner of South Shasta Ave. and Alta Vista Rd. which would include room for a pair of food trucks. The property currently has a vacant home that was constructed back in 1956. The city later rezoned the property to C-1 commercial back in 1980, according to Community Development Director Mike Upston.
The proposal is for a building of 11,700 square feet which would include three commercial tenants and a pair of food trucks at the southern edge of the parking lot. During the public comment portion of the hearing, no one spoke against the proposal. However, Commissioner Mille Wewerka noted that the two handicapped parking spaces should be placed at the center of the building to make them equidistant from the two outside office spaces.
City Councilor Lena Beach, speaking as a private citizen, asked that the pitch of the roof be raised to make it more prominent as an entryway into Eagle Point. However, Bob Horton, the architect of the project, stated the current roof is already 15 feet above the building ceiling and he didn’t need additional attic space. Questions were also raised about the additional cost it would entail and the impact on the view of nearby residents. In the end, the commission voted unanimously to approve the application. The meeting concluded with Upston giving the commission an update on various development projects already under way within the city.
